International Arbitration in A Time of Change: China’s and International Perspectives
ONLINE - ZOOM MEETING
ORGANISED BY: Oxford University (Chinese Law Discussion Group)
TIME: 24 Feb 2021, 9:00PM to 10:30PM
The changing global economic environment and new technologies are bringing new challenges and opportunities for international arbitration. In the meanwhile, China is becoming an increasingly important player in this field. It is a time for change, and both international institutions and institutions based in China are responding by reforming and modernizing their arbitration rules and practice. In the area of investment arbitration, the UNCITRAL Working Group III has been working on Investor-State Dispute Settlement (ISDS) reform since 2017. ICSID is currently amending its rules and regulations. In China, arbitration institutions including CIETAC have been modernizing and internationalizing their practice, stimulated by the Belt and Road Initiative. How do international arbitration institutions and Chinese arbitration institutions respond to the challenges and opportunities in this new environment? What is China’s position in the ongoing ISDS reform? How would China’s increasing participation in international arbitration influence future practice? This event brings together leading practitioners in this field to explore these issues.
Speakers:
Ms. Meg Kinnear, Secretary-General of the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID)
Mr. Wang Cheng Jie, Secretary-General of the China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission (CIETAC)
Mr. Sun Zhao, Deputy Director of Investment Law Division in the Department of Treaty and Law, Ministry of Commerce of China (MOFCOM)
